Privacy policy

Last updated July 2026. Plain-English version of how Foolscap handles information from readers.

What we collect

Foolscap is a content site. Most visitors read entries without giving us any information at all. If you sign up for the dispatch newsletter, we collect the email address you provide and nothing more. If you email us directly, we keep that correspondence in the ordinary way anyone would to answer a question or track a correction.

Standard web logs

Like most websites, our hosting infrastructure keeps basic technical logs — things like IP address, browser type, and pages requested — for security and performance purposes. We don't cross-reference these logs with any newsletter list or build individual reader profiles from them.

Cookies

The site may use a small number of cookies or local storage entries for basic functionality, such as remembering that you already subscribed to the newsletter so we don't show the same prompt twice. We do not use cookies to build advertising profiles of individual readers ourselves.

Third parties

We do not sell, rent, or trade reader information to third parties. If we ever engage a third-party service to send the newsletter or measure aggregate traffic, that service is bound to use the data only to provide the service to us, not for its own separate purposes.

Boxlist and this policy

This policy covers the Foolscap website. Boxlist, described on our app page, is a separate piece of software; where the local-first ledger is concerned, entries you create are stored on your own device by default and are not transmitted anywhere unless you explicitly enable a sync feature.

Children's privacy

Foolscap is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we will update the date at the top of this page. We don't expect frequent changes, since we don't collect much to begin with.
